Sleeping Awake

In the dark I lay in dust and sand
With a pack upon my back.
My rifle is perched at my side
In case of an attack.
There was a time when I believed in fighting in this war.
But I'm not certain any more just who I'm fighting for.
A cry for their democracy has brought me to this place.
The dictator no longer here,
We ended his cruel reign.
His people do not want us here,
They spit on us to shame.
It seems this cause might be a pawn in a politician's game.
I long to be, I long to be
Home in my native land.
But congress can't seem to agree upon an exit plan.
So here I lay sleeping awake thinking of my foreign life.
While the people who have put me here are sleeping with their wives.
